SharePoint 2013 Workflow: Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException: App Management Shared Service Proxy is not installed.

Today I came across the following error when I tried to activate a SharePoint designer workflow feature:

SharePoint 2013 Workflow: Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException: App Management Shared Service Proxy is not installed.

So I went to Central admin and I found that there was no App Management Service configured. I’m for the project that I’m working on not really interested in the App Management service. However it is required if you want to run 2013 workflows.

Make sure that next to creating an instance of the server in Application Management -> Manage Services Applications you also start the service in System Settings -> Services on Server.

If you don’t start the service you will get the following error:

Microsoft.SharePoint.SPEndpointAddressNotFoundException: There are no addresses available for this application.
