When you create flows in solutions in Power Automate using the new Power Automate Studio, then you will have noticed the new Version history option. In this post all the information you need to get started with version history in Power Automate.
Safe draft
Table of Contents
If we update our flow and then save a draft before we run our flow we will see that the flow running will still run the most recently published flow.
Publish
Once the flow has been published the flow will be running the new version as expected.
Version History
Now comes the interesting bit.
How about we made some changes and we want to undo these changes. In other words we want to go back to the previous version.
All you have to do is select the version that you want and restore that version.
Restore a previous version
To restore the previous version of your flow click on the restore link
Then after a while you will be told that a new draft version of the flow has been saved
Bonus!!!
Now imagine that you create an invalid flow and you have been doing a lot of work. It is time to do something else. In the past you couldn’t save the flow unless it was valid. Now with the save Draft option you can save a draft without having to resolve all the issues first! This is such a huge bonus!
One important thing to consider however is that when you save a draft version of the flow, the switch to classic option will be disabled. This may case problems if you rely on features that are not fully supported in the new Power Automate designer.
Pieter, I am not seeing these additions to the Power Automate interface, even with the “New designer” toggled on. I assume this is the cloud version of Power Automate — possibly a pre-release version that you are depicting? Or is this a case where Microsoft is rolling out an update in phases, and I just haven’t received it yet? The “Save draft” feature alone will save me countless frustrations, so I would love to use it!
Also, for awareness, a couple of the graphics for your article appear to be missing: the “Save a draft of a flow” graphic, and the first graphic under “Version history in Power Automate”.
Thanks for continuing to provide interesting posts on features of Power Automate.
Hi Aylarja,
Is you flow part of a solution? These options only appear when the flow is inside a solution.
I have had some issues with images recently. I will fix that missing image shortly.
Pieter, yes, my flows in this case are part of a solution. I do not have administrative control over our Power Automate environment, though, so I guess it’s possible the new features have been disabled. I see the graphics are fixed – thank you!
